Healthcare Fraud, Super-Sized

DOJ charged 15 people in alleged $1.8 billion health-care fraud schemes, because apparently “do no harm” needed a legal footnote

The Justice Department says the cases include sham substance-abuse treatment, unnecessary medical procedures, hospice billing for patients who were not terminally ill, and bogus pharmacy claims.

One Takedown, Several Terrible Ideas

The Justice Department announced charges against 15 defendants, including six medical professionals, in Los Angeles-area health-care fraud cases. Prosecutors say the schemes collectively produced more than $1.8 billion in fraudulent claims to government and private health programs.

The largest alleged scheme involved more than $1.6 billion billed for sham substance-abuse treatment. The DOJ says vulnerable people were lured to California with free flights, housing, gift cards, marijuana, cigarettes and controlled substances, then routed through treatment companies that billed insurers.

Medical Billing As A Theme Park

Other cases announced in the takedown allege $134 million in unnecessary atherectomy procedures that injured patients, more than $138 million in hospice claims for people who were not terminally ill, and a $270 million Medi-Cal scheme involving bogus prescriptions.

The alleged menu is impressive in the worst possible way: exploit people seeking recovery, perform procedures they do not need, declare living patients terminal, and send the bill to a government program. Somewhere, an accountant is demanding a loyalty card.

The Bottom Line

Eight defendants were arrested, and the charges remain allegations. The DOJ says investigators used data analytics and traditional work to find the schemes. If the government’s numbers hold up in court, this was not a billing error—it was an entire industrial complex built around making vulnerable people and taxpayers pay for fiction.
