David Morens, a former senior adviser to Anthony Fauci at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, pleaded guilty Tuesday to conspiring to defraud the United States. AP reports that the felony charge carries a maximum sentence of five years, with sentencing scheduled for November 12.
Prosecutors say Morens used a private email account to get around federal public-records requirements while discussing COVID-19 research grants, including an effort to revive a controversial coronavirus grant. The point of public-records laws is that government business is supposed to remain discoverable even after the inbox has been cleaned up and the subject line has been made boring.
Why This Matters
This case is not a verdict on every argument about COVID’s origins, and Fauci was not charged in it. It is a much narrower and more basic problem: a federal official allegedly treated a personal email account like a trapdoor underneath transparency rules.
That is the bureaucratic equivalent of putting official files in a shoebox labeled “Definitely Not Government Records.” It does not make the records less official. It just makes the eventual subpoena more embarrassing.
